Gold legacy, glass and industrial manufacturing

Springs combines an East Rand gold-mining legacy with an established industrial base. PFG locates its glass operation in New Era, Springs, linking the town to building and automotive material supply chains. The wider East Rand also supports gold recovery from historical tailings. DRDGOLD reported that Daggafontein received its first tailings in July 2026, strengthening the relevance of residue management and water infrastructure to the area.

Activities driving the economy

  • Glass manufacturing and processing
  • Industrial production and engineering
  • Regional gold-tailings recovery
  • Trade and industrial services

Glass is a manufactured material, not evidence of locally mined silica. Daggafontein is a regional tailings-deposition facility; it is not described here as a new underground mine or as proof of environmental compliance. Ekurhuleni economic totals cover the whole metro.

Development priorities

Assess industrial water reuse, recoverable glass and compatible mineral residues, and traceable handling of historical mining materials. Prioritise dust, water protection and safe land reuse.

Embo Sotho Resources’ development interpretation; opportunities require project-specific assessment.

Resource recovery

DRDGOLD’s 19 August 2026 release reports that Daggafontein received first tailings in July 2026. This describes regional deposition infrastructure associated with gold-tailings retreatment, not town-level gold output.

Methodology & coverage
  • Metropolitan indicators apply to Ekurhuleni as a whole; they are not town measurements.
  • A verified Census 2011 town series is not added in this edition.
  • Visit dates establish the fieldwork period, not laboratory measurements, interviews or site compliance findings.

Governance: the AGSA 2024/25 report series was checked. No individual municipal audit opinion is assigned here without a verified municipal audit record.
